Affiliate disclosure
The tools are free. The site helps pay for itself with affiliate links.
When a tool shows a compatible gear panel, the retailer links in it are affiliate links. If you buy through one, the site earns a commission from the retailer. The price you pay is the same.
How gear is chosen
Recommendations come from the numbers in the tool, not from who pays the most:
- Back focus: spacers whose lengths match the best combination for your gap.
- Untracked exposure: star trackers when your untracked limit is under 15 seconds, faster lenses near your focal length, and a lens heater strap.
- Dark sky calendar: dual-band filters for months where the moon is up for at least 40% of the dark hours.
- Exposure: filters near the bandwidth you chose, dual-band for color cameras. When high read noise is what makes your subs long, lower-noise cameras with the sub length each would give.
- Dew point: heaters and controllers when your optics are near the dew point, a dew shield when they are not.
- Target guides: telescopes and lenses whose focal length frames that target on an APS-C sensor, and dual-band filters for emission objects only.
- Monthly target lists and the new moon calendar: filters for imaging emission nebulae on moonlit nights.
- Imaging planner: scopes whose focal length suits tonight's best target, and dual-band filters when the moon is bright.
